Where Kids Cook, Create, and Grow

A summer full of real recipes, hands-on skills, and the joy of making something delicious from scratch.

Imagine your child rolling out fresh pasta dough, pressing handmade tortillas, or carefully crimping the edges of their very own empanada and then sitting down to eat the lunch they made themselves. That's just a Tuesday at Schoolhouse Summer Cooking Camp.

Each day is unique. Every week is packed with recipes, projects, and the kind of learning that sticks, not because it's on a worksheet, but because they made it with their own two hands.

"Cooking with kids is not just about feeding them, it's about giving them the confidence to feed themselves."

At Schoolhouse, we believe the kitchen is one of the best classrooms there is. And summer is the perfect time to slow down, roll up our sleeves, and cook something wonderful.

Why Cooking Camp

Big Skills Hidden Inside Every Recipe

Behind every bubbling pot and beautifully folded dumpling is a whole world of child development happening in real time. Cooking teaches kids to follow multi-step instructions, build patience, problem-solve, and take pride in their work. It's one of the most naturally developmental activities a child can do and it's genuinely fun.

🧮 Math & Measurement

Fractions come alive when you're measuring flour for pasta dough or doubling a cookie recipe. Campers practice real math in every session.

🔬 Science Thinking

Why does bread rise? What happens when egg hits hot oil? Kids ask questions and discover answers through tasting, observing, and experimenting.

🤝 Teamwork

Cooking together means communicating, taking turns, and cheering each other on. Our warm, encouraging staff models a culture of support.

💪 Independence

Age-appropriate tools and guided practice let kids take real ownership of what they make, building lasting confidence in the kitchen and beyond.

🎨 Creativity

From decorating to improvising flavors, there's space for kids to put their personal spin on every dish and truly make it their own.

🌿 World Curiosity

Through diverse recipes, pasta, tortillas, empanadas and more, campers explore food traditions from around the world.

Maddi’s Fridge: Bringing Food Insecurity to Children’s Attention
By Cheryl Knecht September 17, 2025
After nearly 10 years of teaching, I’ve noticed a pattern: parents who love cooking are eager for their kids to join in, while those who see it as a chore often don’t realize how much their children can gain from cooking classes. I often hear concerns like: “My child is a picky eater. They don’t touch vegetables and won’t eat anything in that class.” “They’re not interested in cooking. They just want to make cookies and brownies but don’t want to cook meals.” “They have food allergies and won’t be able to taste anything in the class,” “They’re too young—it’s not safe for them to be in the kitchen yet.” But in practice, these are the kids who benefit most. Here’s why:

A Cookbook for My Son
By Cheryl Knecht May 27, 2025
Watching my son graduate and prepare to move out for an adventurous life, I reflects on my time in the kitchen and wonders if I taught him enough about cooking. As a quiet but meaningful way of showing care, cooking became a shared language—one I now captures in a simple recipe binder for him to take. It’s not about perfect meals, but about equipping him with comfort, confidence, and a taste of home.
Including Kids in Cooking Blog Post

Getting kids involved in the kitchen builds confidence, independence, and curiosity around food. Let them help pack lunch, pick groceries, or create their own snacks. Encourage creativity, embrace the mess, and teach them how tools and ingredients work. Simple rituals like baking together or growing herbs can turn everyday moments into fun, hands-on learning experiences.
